Netta Loogatha

Netta Loogatha (1942–2022) was a celebrated Kaiadilt artist from Bentinck Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland, whose paintings expressed profound connections to Country, memory, and ancestral knowledge. Following the displacement of the Kaiadilt people to Mornington Island in 1946, Loogatha’s artistic practice became a powerful way of maintaining and sharing cultural stories associated with her homeland. Her vibrant abstract works depict significant sites, reefs, waterholes, and family histories, translating lived experience and cultural memory into striking compositions. Netta was the sister and lifelong companion of the internationally renowned artist Sally Gabori, and together they played an important role in bringing Kaiadilt culture and stories to national and international audiences. Her work has been exhibited widely across Australia and is held in significant public and private collections.
